As many of us follow the developments of the “Yellow, Orange, and Red Zones” due to the rise in COVID-19 illness in the State, it is important to understand the direct impact it has on NY schools.

If our area enters a “Yellow Micro-Cluster Zone”, (a seven-day infection rate of 3.5% or higher for 10 consecutive days), it would trigger a requirement that our district tests a random 20 percent of on-site students and staff to gauge the level of infection in our schools. If the positive rate is lower than that of the surrounding county, schools can remain open.

Our district understands the importance of keeping students in school, in-person, every day, and we are fully committed to doing everything in our power to keep our students and staff safe and keep schools open. Therefore, we are actively preparing for the possibility of needing to conduct the mandated COVID-19 testing, should our district enter a “Yellow Zone.”

I have spoken with our County Public Health Officials and together, we have developed a plan to conduct these tests with the appropriate Public Health laboratory certification. We will handle the rapid testing of students and staff in the district as county health officials offer technical support and advice.

Parent/Guardian Consent to Testing

The following information pertains to in-person learners only. Students who participate in the fully remote learning model will not be asked to partake in the following testing process.

The District is seeking parent/guardian consent for all in-person learners to test your child for COVID-19 infection. Should the District enter a “Yellow Zone,” we will randomly test 20 percent of the school population, over a 2-week span, in order to remain open for in-person instruction. If we do not receive permission for at least 20 percent of our students, we will be required by NYSDOH to close our buildings for all in-person learning.

Consent to testing is not mandatory. Should you not consent, your child will still attend in-person learning and will not be tested. However, we highly encourage as many families to participate as it is imperative to keeping our schools open. Again, should we not receive enough student permissions, the district will have to switch to a fully remote learning model.

If you do agree to allow the district to test your child for COVID-19, please fill out the following COVID-19 PARENT/GUARDIAN CONSENT FORM.  We ask that families please fill out this digital form no later than December 14, 2020.

The Testing Process for Students

We understand that many families will have questions/concerns regarding what the testing process entails. Please watch THIS VIDEO, to familiarize yourself with what the testing process looks like.

As explained in the video above, we will randomly select students to receive a free diagnostic test* for the COVID-19 virus. Elementary School Nurse, Annie Horn, RN, will administer the tests. The testing process will involve inserting a small swab, similar to a Q-Tip, into the front of the nose. This is the simple, quick, shallow nasal swab test. Results will be available in 15 minutes. Parents/guardians will be notified if your child tests positive for COVID-19. Any students who test positive will be sent home and must be kept at home until meeting the Saratoga or Warren County Department of Public Health criteria to return to school. Please contact your child’s doctor immediately to review the test results should your child test positive for COVID-19.

As always, the Hadley-Luzerne Central School District thanks you for your efforts and understanding as we navigate this evolving pandemic together. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s building main office if you have any further questions.
